"We wanted a a plain wooden garden gate for the side of the house . We looked at quite a few but they were either very flimsy or very expensive, this one is sturdy and looks good and is excellent value"

Insructions Query,
02 July 2008

Pros: easy to follow instructions Cons: would have preferred heavier construction
"If you build this according to the printed instructions your gate will be squint. Instructions read "cut top rail to the gate width less 140mm" this should read "130mm" as the width of the latch post and hinge post added together is 2 X 65mm = 130mm. As the construction relies heavily on glue strength I would advise a strong glue such as Cascamite (now called Polymite) or a good alternative would be Gorilla Glue. I chose NOT to use a "General woodworking adhesive" which is likely to be just a PVA. Finally, be prepared to have some clamps on standby as the slightest twist in one of the spars will NOT give a good flat glue surface. I used clamps on the mid-rail to get it to seat into the half-lap joints cut into the posts as it was too tight to hammer in. OK gate, but might have preferred heavier posts. My last gate was a bit heavier construction but then it was 20 years ago I built it."

Excellent value for money,
22 June 2008
By BobbyBoyfrom Kent
Pros: price Cons: some wood a bit damaged
"A bargain at £27.99! I bought 2 to cover a wider opening and they can be trimmed to fit any width so are ideal. In fact, I am thinking about having some wider rails made up by my local wood store to create driveway gates where I need 2 x 4ft They are softwood so do soak up a fair bit of preservative but thats to be expected."

Good cheap gate,

Pros: cheap price Cons: need hinges and preservative
"We bought 2 of these gates and put them together to cover a wider opening. It cost quite a lot to treat them first as it seemed to suck up the preservative. We have also noticed that some of the wood has since discoloured - but not rotted"
